The Trouble With Soy

2006-12-31 20:40:45

--- Rogoff Family <bcrogoff@...
I stopped eating any soy products this past winter. My
own personal experience is that soy is a toxin. If I
eat anything with soy I gain about 5 pounds of water
weight and I cannot lose weight. The water gain is
because my body is trying to protect itself from a
toxic substance by surrounding it with water in the
fat cell. I am struggling with thyroid
problems/estrogen dominance etc and I won't touch soy
with a 10 foot poll!

Cindy
Rogoff Family,
I have the same problem with soy. I am hypothyroid and am forever on diet -
lately I can't lose
weight at all, so probably soy is the culprit - I stopped HRT because of a
fibroid in my breast and
because of hot flashes I started taking the soy "tablets" to replace the HRT and
they do stop the
hot flashes. So what to do? I have to eat bran in the morning (because of
acute constipation) and
I eat the bran with soy milk - please help!

Re: [hypothyroidism] Iodine???

2006-12-30 22:46:43

Hi there, new to the list here. :)
I have thyroiditis, the autoimmune kind and I understand that iodine is only
a problem if you are taking synthetic thyroid hormone...or if you have
HYPERTHYROID. Otherwise iodine is needed by the thyroid to make hormones.
Infact hypothyroid is linked to iodine and selenium deficiency.
In my case I am trying to deal with mercury (which displaces iodine in the
thyroid) toxicity caused from dental fillings and the parasites that go
along with it. Ironically enough, iodine is also needed to keep parasites
away.
That's my 2 cents...interested in any feedback.

Just an underactive thyroid. If it was autoimmune, I would have tested high
for thyroid antibodies, but I didn't.
It might be that your body has trouble converting T4 to T3. That's not
uncommon.

ovulation & hypothyroidism

2006-12-30 08:08:14

OK....a question for all the women out there!...
With hypothyroidism, do you think we ovulate as we should? I have normal
28-day cycles and am 39 yrs old. I had my first baby at 37 on the first try.
Now my dh and I are trying for #2... we missed last month... we tried 6 days
in a row and my OPK (ovulation predictor kit) read positive on day 14 ... we
didn't get preggo this month though... just wondering if anyone knows if I
could possibly not be ovulating due to the hypothyroidism??
Thanks!

RE: [hypothyroidism] ovulation & hypothyroidism

2006-12-30 03:15:34

Dear Marylee:
While not one of "the women out there" I have treated gynecological problems
for over 30 years. I'd like to share some of my insights.
Pregnancy is highly dependent upon adequate thyroid function.
In fact, most gynecological problems are due to estrogen dominance, meaning
excess estrogen, thyroid dysfunction and low progesterone.
Miscarriages are due largely to progesterone deficiency...and an obvious
estrogen dominance.
Remember, the "pill" does not prevent pregnancy. It terminates the
possibility of the foetus to survive early on.
For a woman the big triad is estrogen / progesterone / thyroid.
They must be in balance. Most women have excess estrogen, a thyroid
dysfunction and far too little progesterone. This is a reciope for all PMS
and menopausal symptoms [in addition to presence of viruses, bacteria,
candida and fungi and toxic metals].
The best authority on this hormonal triad is Dr. Ray Peat PhD. His web site
is www.efn.org/~raypeat You may have to try several search engines to find
this site.

RE: [hypothyroidism] Barley green...not for everyone!

2006-12-30 00:32:56

Pam:
I'm not quite sure what you strongly disagree with...
Iodine IS indicated for those with hyper. An auto-immune dysfunction is not
about the thyroid making too much T4, its about destruction of the gland
releasing excess T4 while the gland is being destroyed by mercury or herpes.
The important strategy is to eliminate the toxic metals and or the herpes or
other pathogens. The thyroid must have iodine.....after the auto-immune
dysfunction is eliminated. Thats what our Thyroid Regeneration Protocol
does.

Earl

Barley green...not for everyone!

2006-12-29 16:18:16

Earl
I strongly disagree, as I happen to be allergic to barley! I felt sick
every time when I took it, and so quit even though a friend of mine was
thrilled with it. Then I had the ELISA test and found I was allergic to
barley.
Also, for a lot of us, iodine can be troublesome, especially those with
autoimmune thyroid disease (the majority) and those taking Armour (which
has a lot of iodine in it!)

People are affected by them; they just arent' diagnosed. The mercury slowly
destroys the immune system and over time cause a lot of illness. There has
been plenty of research on this. The medical community is political and
influenced by money. The researchers are funded by pharmaceutical companies
and others who are biased for certain types of treatment.
I'm not saying your problem is mercury, but at the same time, dentists are

Hello . . . I have been a subscriber to this list for a little over a year
now, silently reading about others and learning from them.
About a year ago my doctor told me I have hypothyroidism, and told me that
I would need to be on medication for the rest of my life to treat it. I
don't have much to complain about as far as related problems, or much more
to report other than the fact that my medication dosage has been bounced
from one end of the spectrum to the other to try to help stabilize things;
yet things remain unstable.
Now, I have recently become increasingly concerned since my husband was
just diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I find this extremely coincidental
that he would be diagnosed with the same thing as me. Our family doctor
said it is merely coincidence, since it is an auto immune deficiency, and
that we aren't doing anything wrong or that would cause the problem. I
have found it hard to accept the statements made by my doctors when he says
the cause is not known, nor is it of concern. It seems to me that there is
something wrong with that . . . but maybe I just don't know enough about
it. Well, now that it affects both myself and my husband, I am more
motivated to learn more.
I would be interested if anyone can offer any thoughts or advice related to
the coincidence of both of us being affected by the same condition.

Re: [hypothyroidism] Vitamins

How do you get these vitamins?

Vitamins

2006-12-26 11:03:41

Centrum, One a Day and other store vitamins only have about a 3%
absorbtion rate.
All the other expensive brands only offer up to a 35% absorbtion of
the minerals. I have seen reports from doctors on this. But there is
one that is the only one with a PROVEN 98% absorbtion rate. The
process it uses is the only one there is that is patented and proven
to work. I have my whole family taking them. I do not sell these
vitamins but I can show you how you can get them directly from the
company.
They are the vitamins that Bobbie Porter was taking while she was
pregnant with the seven babies. She is the only person who had such a
pregnancy where all the babies lived and were born healthy. Her
doctors attributed it to these vitamins.

Re: [hypothyroidism] Hypo Symptoms Back Again

2006-12-26 05:15:25

I'm not an expert by ANY means, but here are some suggestions:
(1) If you have pituitary problems, your TSH - which is controlled by your
pituitary - may not be adequately reflecting your thyroid hormone level. In
other words, you may need MORE thyroid hormone.
(2) Many people do better on Armour than Synthroid. Consider switching.
(3) Low progesterone and low thyroid can be linked. Maybe try a natural
progesterone cream for the PMS.
(4) and most important - get thee to the thyroid board at
http://www.thyroid.about.com! There are TONS of thyroid patients posting
there - many with far more information and knowledge than I have, and many
who are more up on things than most doctors!

Hypo Symptoms Back Again

2006-12-26 02:33:26

I haven't posted in awhile... I was diagnosed hypothyroid last September. I
developed all the symptoms after the birth of my son 6 months before that.
They called it "post-partum hypothyroidism." I started on Synthroid .1 and
went to .125. I felt GREAT for months and my TSH ran very low, between .3
and .7.
A couple of months ago my hypo symptoms began returning. My hair is falling
out for about the 5th time, dry skin, irregular periods/cramping etc., lower
libido, joint pain, TIRED, kinda depressed, weight gain etc. I've also
developed horrible mood swings that are slightly violent! The week or so
before my period I'm kinda psychotic! Scary!
I told my endo and she asked if I had milk in my breasts... I said, "NO."
She asked if she could check them, and squeezed and milk just poured out. I
quit breastfeeding 9 months ago. She ran a bunch of blood work and guessed I
had high prolactin (which comes from a pituitary gland tumor which turns out
to be very common in thyroid patients!). My tests came back negative and my
TSH was down to .1. That's off the chart on the low end, but my symptoms are
not hyperthyroid, they are my original hypothyroid symptoms.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with me? The doc doesn't want to
lower my Synthroid dose, and frankly, I'm afraid to alter the dose because my
symptoms would probably worsen due to a variation of the dose. Why do I have
the symptoms and why would I have milk in my breasts?
I would love to hear anyone's views on vitamins needed that I can buy at a
health food store; I'm not interested in trying the website pills promoted at
this site. Much thanks!

FLUORIDE- CURE OR CURSE?

2006-12-25 07:30:12

Health Freedom Resources Public Awareness Announcement # 2
FLUORIDE- CURE OR CURSE?
FACE THE TRUTH OR TAKE THE CONSEQUENCES...
[Full text of the article appears on our website at
http://www.healthfree.com/paa/paa0002.htm ]
Dear Readers,
Fluoridation of drinking water has been called everything
from a Public Health cure-all for tooth decay to a
Communist plot against the USA. We feel that this issue
is worth investigating to sort out the facts. Millions of
people are now being forced to drink water that contains
a foreign additive that most of them never asked for or
agreed to accept.
We have four questions:
1) Does fluoride actually help prevent tooth decay, THE
reason promoters use to justify its addition to our water
supply?
2) What, if any, negative health effects does fluoride
have on people?
3) If fluoride has known negative health effects, why
is it so heavily promoted by certain groups?
4) Even if fluoride is beneficial, it is also readily
available in nearly all toothpastes and in dental
treatments. Why are whole populations being
force-medicated with fluoridated water- why are
individuals not being offered the power of choice in
this matter?
Rather than answer these questions completely for you,
we prefer that you do your OWN research on this issue.
The following links offer a great deal of useful information
on this topic. We encourage you to seek out "positive"
data on fluoride as well as negative, and to draw your
own conclusions. (We have included the American Dental
Association (ADA) information on Fluoride for you- they are
about as "Pro-Fluoride" as you can get, yet even they
are concerned about some aspects of fluoridation.)
Our position is this: For most of the 20th century, the
tobacco industry enjoyed the "protection" of the United
States government- the courts, congress and such agencies
that are supposed to protect the welfare of the American
public as the FDA and the Department of Health, Education
and Welfare. Then, in the last ten years their scam was
attacked in the courts and now practically all who do not
smoke view the industry as an "evil business." Details of
how they came to power and maintained their lucrative hold
over so many consumers is now the subject of drama in
books and movies.
This will also be the fate of the use of fluoride in
our society. This story has many of the same elements,
only much larger and more pervasive than cigarette use.
Both the tobacco industry and the fluoridation promoters
used falsehoods, half-truths, distortions and cover-ups
to promote their products. The continued use of both
substances destroys the health and lives of millions
of unsuspecting consumers. Vast profit is realized by
the corporations involved and various aspects of
government look the other way. However, fluoride had one
tremendous point going for it that tobacco could never
claim- the myth that fluoride is beneficial to one's
teeth. As long as this could be believed by enough
people at large, the use of fluoride could be justified.
Now, read further to find out the truth regarding fluoride
in our lives and environment.
Before I researched this material, I thought that the
fluoride issue didn't really apply to me personally
because I don't live in a community that uses fluoride
in the water supply, haven't used fluoride toothpaste
for years and refuse to let dentists use fluoride on me
in their treatments. However, fluoride is also found in
many of the liquid food products on the market, like
soft drinks and juices from concentrates, teas, etc., as
well as fish, chicken, beef and other food sources
exposed to fluoridated water.
These materials are very eye-opening and provide information
we all need to know. To this end, we have excerpted
portions of each site's article so that you can get an
idea of what it is about before choosing to visit it.
THE ADA's SITE- "THE FACTS ABOUT FLUORIDE"
http://www.ada.org/consumer/fluoride/articles/fa-01.html
Includes the following excerpts:
"Acid is formed when the bacteria in plaque
break down sugars and carbohydrates from the
diet. Repeated acid attacks break down the
tooth, which causes cavities. Fluoride also
acts to repair, or remineralize, areas in
which acid attacks have already begun."
Editor's Note: Are not these "sugars and carbohydrates from
the diet" usually from processed sources, rather than raw
and natural?
"The ADA recommends the use of fluoride
mouth rinses, but not for children under
six years of age because they may swallow
the rinse."
Editor's Note: Wow!
"It is important to note that fluoridated
water may be consumed from sources other
than the home water supply, such as the
workplace, school and/or day care, bottled
water, filtered water and from processed
beverages and foods prepared with fluoridated
water."
Editor's Note: Materials from other sources show just
how pervasive fluoride is in the food supply.
"No matter how you get the fluoride you need --
whether it be through your drinking water,
supplements, toothpaste, mouth rinse or
professionally applied fluoride -- you can
be confident that fluoride is silently at
work fighting decay. Safe, convenient,
effective...however you describe it,
fluoride fits naturally into any dental
care program. For more information about the
oral health benefits of fluoride, just ask
your dentist."
Editor's note: now for the rest of the story:

19.One more time, please: what's this really all about?
20.Where can I learn more? - including Updated News and Reports, and
how you can support a call for Congressional hearings on fluoridation
chemicals."
"1. What are these chemicals they want me to drink?
The most common forms of fluoride added to your
drinking water are the silicofluorides (SiF),
which include fluorosilicates and fluorosilicic
acid (FSA). They're used in approximately 90% of
fluoridated U.S. water supplies. FSA is an
extremely corrosive and toxic compound that
originates from the phosphate fertilizer
industry. Air pollution scrubbers collect
FSA to prevent it from escaping into the
environment, where it would poison plant and
animal life. Unfortunately, fluoride isn't the
only toxin collected.
The actual substance used to fluoridate your
water is only about 25% FSA. The rest is a toxic
soup of heavy metals and industrial contaminants.
According to a retired supervisor with 21
years of experience in phosphate fertilizer
production, the FSA used to fluoridate drinking
water is made with water from evaporation ponds.
These noxious pools are a catch-all for toxic sludge
and every imaginable waste chemical.
What's going into your water is not some
pharmaceutical that's been tested for purity.
It is a waste product containing mercury, lead,
cadmium, arsenic, and numerous other toxic
compounds. Its exact composition is unknown,
because it's never analyzed.
If this FSA solution and other fluoride
compounds weren't being purchased by taxpayers
and dumped into their drinking water, then the
fertilizer industries would have to take them
to the highest rated hazardous waste facility.
But because these toxic compounds are first
being channeled through our homes and our bodies,
fluoridation is really a form of legalized pollution,
an end-run around laws that require hazardous
fluoride compounds to be properly disposed of
(at a cost of several thousand dollars per
tanker truck).
4. Is this a good way for children to get
fluoride? Fluoridation is almost 100%
inefficient - a total waste of money.
For example, the city of Escondido, California
added 33 tons of fluoride to their water
supply in a single year. Only 16 pounds of it
actually reached the target group of children.
In other words, 99.98% of the fluoride - 33 tons
of a poison more toxic than lead -
was dumped into the environment.
Imagine two trucks that each contain 1300
pounds of fluorosilicic acid mixture, about
a week's supply for Escondido. The first
load is bought by the city for $455 and added
to the water supply. The second is just
dumped into the river, which should result in
environmental fines of several thousand dollars.
Since water treatment plants cannot remove
fluoride compounds (nor can household carbon
water-filters), what's the difference to
the environment?
Adding fluoride to the public water supply
would be like adding aspirin in order to prevent
heart attack and stroke in the elderly, or . . .
like spraying anti-hay fever medicine into the
air. Adding this or any drug to our water supply
is ridiculous, unless you want to fluoridate our
lawns, cars, clothes, dishes, and skin, as well
as fish and other wildlife. This is a
grossly inefficient way to deliver fluoride.
Fluoride is best delivered in toothpaste or
by a dentist, because its greatest benefit
is received when the fluoride is topically
applied and held against tooth structure.
Ingesting fluoride from drinking water isn't
effective. In 1997, the Canadian Dental
Association agreed with the American Academy
of Pediatrics that "the primary mechanism of
action of fluoride to prevent dental decay is
topical."
At about age 13, any advantage fluoridation
might offer comes to an end. Fluoride's supposed
benefits are for children older than three years,
not adults and senior citizens, therefore very
little of the fluoridated water actually reaches
the target group. Everyone else is overdosed.
Mass medication via fluoridated water puts
certain groups of people at risk. It is a
reckless and criminal practice that most
countries prohibit. Since everyone drinks
different amounts of water, there is no way
to control how much fluoride people consume.
Laborers, athletes, diabetics, and
people in hot or dry climates tend to
drink more water, hence more fluoride
(in fluoridated areas). It is therefore
impossible to safely control what dosage
of fluoride a person receives via
the water supply.
What's more, in 1993 the U.S. Dept. of Health
stated that "subsets of the population may be
unusually susceptible to the toxic effects of
fluoride and its compounds. These include the
elderly, people with deficiencies of calcium,
magnesium, and/or vitamin C, and people with
cardiovascular and kidney problems." In other
words, most of us. Poor nutrition is widespread
throughout America. Furthermore, adult-onset
diabetes is becoming increasingly prevalent in
children. This disease adversely affects kidney
function, which means more fluoride will be
retained by the body - building lifetime levels
that will have serious consequences later.
(If the authorities were serious about protecting
health, they would add magnesium to the water
instead of fluoride. Magnesium deficiency alone
has been associated with hundreds of thousands
of deaths due to heart attacks.)

an excerpt from the link under "History- Economic

"How We Got Fluoridated," by Philip Heggen
How We Got Fluoridated
PART II . . . A Federally Funded, National
Strategy Supporting Big Industry
"It was a quirk of fate that the early industrial
secrecy surrounding fluoride in America was to be
strongly reinforced by the federal government for
reasons of national security. Uranium hexafluoride
used in vast quantities was the key chemical
compound in the production of the atomic bomb,
and extensive government information on the
serious health risks of fluoride was kept secret
both during and after World War II. This helps
explain how the fluoride industries were able
to get virtually total cooperation from government
agencies in covering up industry's fluoride pollution.
When the concept of water fluoridation surfaced
around 1939, it was quickly seized by big industry
and turned into a relentless, no-holds-barred
drive for universal fluoridation. This drive
was then implemented by the US Public Health
Service as if it were a military mandate --
a "mission."
"Production of lead free gasoline in the US is
growing rapidly. The process involves the use
of HF to achieve high octane ratings without
using lead. HF is now present in automotive
exhaust gases instead of lead, even though
it is more toxic than lead (see Townsend N.
and Campbell D., Deadly Risks of Lead-free
Petrol. New Statesman, 20 October 1988)."
"It was determined that over the past 50 years
industries have released more than 25,000,000
tons of fluoride gases and particulates into
the atmosphere. Arthritis, one of the most
common physical symptoms of HF, is now found in
the bulk of the senior population in the US.
Fluorides and especially HF are severe nerve
poisons. Alzheimer's Disease, in parallel with
the fluoride poisoning of the US environment
has become the number four cause of death in
the US. Why are these striking synchronisms
not being investigated? The answer is simple:
Industry and their captive federal agencies
do not support it."
"The evidence against the safety of this
public health policy keeps mounting; it
is too compelling to ignore."

THE DANGERS OF FLUORIDE AND FLUORIDATION
http://www.enteract.com/~mgfree/Medical/Fluorine/fluoride_dangers.html
by Michael Schachter, M.D., P.A.
"Approximately half of the United States'
drinking water supply is fluoridated in an
attempt to reduce dental cavities in children.
Is this state of affairs justified? Is it safe?
"Most Americans are unaware of the dangers
of ingesting fluoride. Most dentists,
physicians and scientists are unaware of the
dangers of fluoride and water fluoridation.
According to a 1988 article in the prestigious
Chemical and Engineering News, scientific
voices of opposition to fluoridation have
been suppressed, since 1950 when the U.S.
Public Health Service first endorsed
fluoridation. Power tactics including
threats, ridicule and frank censorship
aimed at scientists and clinicians
knowledgeable about fluoridation have
prevented the truth about fluoride to be
disseminated to the science world as well
as to the public. Whenever a public agency
is charged with objectively evaluating the
safety of a procedure while at the same time
endorsing and recommending it, a serious
conflict of interest is set up. This is
exactly the position of the U.S. Public Health
Service for the past 44 years.
Facts About Fluoride
"Surprisingly, the most recent studies do not
even show that water fluoridation is effective in
reducing tooth decay. In the largest
U.S. study of fluoridation and tooth decay,
United States Public Health Service dental
records of over 39,000 school children,
ages 5-17, from 84 areas around the United States
showed that the number of decayed, missing, and
filled teeth per child was virtually the same
in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas.
Dr. John Colquhoun, former Chief Dental
Officer of the Department of Health for Auckland,
New Zealand, investigated tooth decay statistics
from about 60,000 12 to 13 year old children and
showed that fluoridation had no significant effect
on tooth decay rate."

FLUORIDE - POISON IN THE WATER?
http://ens-news.com/ens/apr99/1999l%2D04%2D05g.html
"Listed as one of the top 25 censored stories of
1998, the use of fluoride in our drinking water
may have originated over 50 years ago as a
way to cover-up the dangers of fluoride first
discovered during the project to create the first
atomic bomb.
"While going over hundreds of declassified
documents about the U.S. atomic bomb
development program, the Manhattan Project,
reporters Joel Griffiths and Chris Bryson found
that fluoride was the key chemical in atomic
bomb production. Millions of tons were
subsequently used during the Cold War period to
manufacture the high-grade uranium and
plutonium for nuclear weapons.
"Fluoride was the top chemical hazard of the
U.S. nuclear weapons program, not only for
workers, but for those living in nearby
communities as well.
"The documents show that the first U.S.
lawsuits levied against the atomic weapons
program were over fluoride poisoning, not
radiation damage. The documents reveal that
the U.S. government secretly ordered atomic
bomb scientists to create "evidence useful
in litigation" against defense contractors
who were being accused of injuring citizens
with fluoride.
"In order to gather information, the
government experimented with the residents of
Newburgh, New York between 1945 and 1955.
In a highly classified operation, the government
secretly gathered blood and tissue samples from
people of that town with the help of the New York
Department of Health. Some of the results were
published, but the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission
(now the Nuclear Regulatory Commission)
censored the report for reasons of "national
security" by removing the evidence of the adverse
health effects from fluoride."

The safety and efficacy of fluoridating the
water supply to fight tooth decay in children
has been hotly debated for more than fifty
years. "Seven cities and three water districts
have placed total bans on fluoridation."
Bock points out, "However, throughout this battle,
little attention has been paid to the actual
fluorine-bearing substances that are added to
the water."
AB 1729 will require the substances used for
fluoridation in California to have been
approved for safety and effectiveness by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It
will further require them to be tested to
assure that any complex combination of elements
is broken down into harmless components
when introduced into actual conditions found
in end-result tap water. The bill also mandates
that no substance classified as a pesticide
or hazardous waste shall be added to the public
drinking water system.
The substances most widely used for water
fluoridation programs are hydrofluosilicic
acid and silicofluorides. A study of 280,000
Massachusetts children published in 1999 shows
that the levels of lead in children's blood was
significantly higher in Massachusetts communities
using silicofluoride, hydrofluosilicic acid, or
sodium silicofluoride, than in towns where water
is treated with sodium fluoride or not fluoridated
at all. The correlation with blood lead levels
is especially serious because lead poisoning is
associated with higher rates of learning
disabilities, hyperactivity, substance abuse, and
crime. (Sodium fluoride is utilized in only 10%
of the nation's programs.)
Of further concern is the interaction between
fluoridation chemicals and the other additives
used in water treatment for corrosion, turbidity,
odors, pH balance, etc. For example, aluminum
compounds are commonly used as clarifying agents
in tap water. A long-term study published in
1988 showed that even low levels of aluminum
fluoride in the drinking water delivered higher
levels of aluminum to the brain than concentrated
aluminum fluoride. In the same study, both the
low levels of aluminum fluoride and the same
amount of sodium fluoride as is found in
"optimally" fluoridated water caused severe
kidney damage and lesions to the brain similar
to those found in humans with Alzheimer's and
other forms of dementia. This is why fluoridation
agents must be tested for interaction with the
other 40+ additives.
"We must ensure the dental health of California's
children." states Bock, "However, we must also
ensure that the chemicals we use to do so do
not in and of themselves pose a severe health
risk. In any case, fluoride in the drinking
water cannot replace good dental hygiene."

Would you believe ...
- 98% of Europe's drinking water is
fluoridation-free
- the fluoride added to Irish drinking water
is toxic waste from the fertiliser industry
- the assertion that fluoride is good
for teeth is a myth
- in fact countries with the best dental

THE FLUORIDATION OF IRELAND
WHAT DO OUR EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURS THINK
ABOUT FLUORIDATION?
- Less than 2% of Europe's population have
fluoridated water.
- Sweden banned fluoridation in 1971.
- West Germany discontinued fluoridation in 1971.
- Norway rejected fluoridation in 1975.
- Holland banned fluoridation in 1976 and
changed its constitution so that it could
never again be introduced.
- Denmark rejected fluoridation in 1977.
The Minister for Environment stated that
"no adequate studies had been carried out
on the long term effect on human organ
systems".
- France rejected fluoridation in 1980.
The Chief of Public Health declared it was
too dangerous.
- 25 out of 26 Councils in Northern Ireland
have recently rejected fluoridation. Only
one small town, Tandragee, is fluoridated.
WHAT DOES THE REST OF THE WORLD THINK
ABOUT FLUORIDATION?
USA
Since 1990 over 45 US cities have rejected
fluoridation. In 1990 forty US dentists
brought a case against the American Dental
Association contending that the Association
purposefully shielded the public from data
that links fluoride to genetic defects, cancer
and other health problems. All US fluoride
toothpaste must carry a poisons symbol, with
a warning to contact the nearest poisons unit
if more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste
is swallowed.
In 1997 the Union of Government Scientists of
the United States Environmental Protection Agency
voted unanimously to co-sponsor a Californian
initiative to ban fluoridation, stating "Our
members review of the body of evidence over
the last 11 years, including animal and human
epidemiology studies, indicates a causal link
between fluoride/fluoridation and cancer,
genetic damage, neurological impairment and
bone pathology"

Health Risks from Processed Foods and The Dangers of Trans Fats

2006-12-24 20:21:31

Subject: Health Risks from Processed Foods and The Dangers of Trans Fats
from:
http://www.mercola.com/2000/june/10/trans_fats.htm
Health Risks from Processed Foods and The Dangers of Trans Fats
Dr. Mary Enig Interviewed By Richard A. Passwater, Ph.D.
In her 1978 report, Dr. Enig challenged the speculation concerning the
relationship of dietary fat and cancer causation. She concluded that
correlations between the increase in per capita dietary fat intake and total
cancer mortality over a sixty-year period show significant positive
correlations for total fat and vegetable fat, and negative correlation for
animal fat. That is the cancer rate is higher when the amount of vegetable fat
or total fat is higher in the diet, but the cancer rate is lower when there
there is more animal fat in the diet. These findings were unpopular then as
they are today, but they are still correct. It is convenient to blame
everything on red meat and animal fat, and believe that vegetable oil is the
great dietary salvation-even if it is partially hydrogenated. At least that is
what the vegetable oil people would like everyone to believe.
Now, we are not saying that lots of dietary fat is good for you and that
vegetables are not good. Eating vegetables, fruits and other whole foods is
very desirable. However, that is not the same as eating partially-hydrogenated
vegetable oils. Americans eat too much fat (especially partially hydrogenated
vegetable oils) and not enough fruits and vegetables. The problem is that the
typical American is not eating enough whole foods, but instead, is eating too
much partially-hydrogenated vegetable oil-a fractionated food-that has been
made into "funny foods" such as margarine or added to baked goods. Such "funny
foods" are far differentthan real whole foods.
Hydrogenation ruins the nutritional value of vegetable oils!
Why would anyone want to ruin the nutrition value of vegetable oils?
The purpose of hydrogenation is to solidify an oil so that it can be made to
resemble real foods such as butter. The hydrogenation process imparts desirable
features such as spreadability, texture, "mouth feel," and increased shelf life
to naturally liquid vegetable oils. In the hydrogenation process, vegetable oil
is reacted under pressure with hydrogen gas at 250 - 400oF for several hours in
the presence of a catalyst such as nickel or platinum. However, this industrial
process cannot control where the hydrogen atoms are added to the "unsaturated"
double bonds. Randomly adding hydrogen atoms to polyunsaturated fats converts
natural food components into many compounds, some of which have never seen
before by man until partially hydrogenated fats were manufactured.
Some of the several dozens of altered compounds created in the manufacture of
partially-hydrogenated fats are "trans" fatty acids. Fatty acids are the
building blocks of fats, much like amino acids are the building blocks of
proteins. Other new compounds accidentally synthesized include fatty acids
having double bonds translocated to new and un-natural positions, and various
molecular fragments. Many of these altered compounds are detrimental to health.
Since "trans" fats are so detrimental to our health. permit me to briefly
review the relevance of distinguishing between "trans" and "cis" fats before
chatting with Dr. Enig. Recently, in the September issue, in the interview with
Dr. Jim Clark and Mr. Lance Schilipalius, we discussed "trans" isomers of
carotenoids. "Trans" means the same thing here. "Cis" and "trans" isomers refer
to how identical atoms are added to double bonds. When the atoms are added to
the same side of the double bond, the compound is called "cis" and the molecule
is bent because of the crowding of the atoms on one side. When the atoms are
added on opposite sides of the double bond, the compound is called "trans" and
molecule is "space-balanced" and straightened. The shape of a molecule is
important because enzymes and their substrates-the molecules enzymes act
upon-must fit together like a key in a lock.
Dr. Enig will discuss this during the interview, but the important thing to
remember is that natural polyunsaturated fatty acids are "cis" compounds and
are bent. Partial hydrogenation produces many un-natural "trans" fats which are
straight and not intended for use in the human body. You don't have to
understand the difference between "trans" and "cis," but it is important that
you know that there is a difference because, as Dr. Enig will explain, it can
affect your health.
Passwater: Dr. Enig, a lot of people are interested in "trans" fats now. You
have been researching them since 1977. How are trans fats harmful to us?
Enig: More than a decade of research at the University of Maryland, as well as
research that was being done at other institutions, showed that consumption of
trans fatty acids from partially hydrogenated (a process that adds hydrogen to
solidify or harden) vegetable fats and oils had many adverse effects in health
areas such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, immunity, reproduction and
lactation, and obesity. It is rather easy today to come up with a long list of
these adverse effects from the published research done by many scientists
around the world, as well as the researchers at the University of Maryland.
The reason there is so much recent interest is that during the past three years
there has been a number of major research reports published in prestigious
medical journals that caught the attention of the press. These and earlier
reports had shown, for example, that consumption of trans fatty acids lower the
"good" HDL cholesterol in a dose response manner (the higher the trans fat
level in the diet, the lower the HDL level in the blood) and raise the
atherogenic lipoprotein(a) in humans as well as raising the "bad" LDL
cholesterol and total blood cholesterol levels by 20-30 milligram-percent.
These studies have usually been shown in independent non-industry studies.
Perhaps the most significant event though was the report from researchers at
Harvard University, who evaluated more than 85,000 women in a long-term
prospective study and found that there was a significantly higher intake of
trans fatty acids in those individuals who developed heart disease.
As regards to the question of cancer, trans fatty acids induce adverse
alterations in the activities of the important enzyme system that metabolizes
chemical carcinogens and drugs (medications), i. e., the mixed-function oxidase
cytochromes P-448/450. The initial research in this area was done by the
Maryland group in collaboration with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration,
and was followed by the more extensive evaluation that I did for my Ph.D.
dissertation; several groups around the country and the world also reported the
same or similar results. Several groups around the world reported a higher
intake of partially hydrogenated fats in those individuals who have developed
cancer.
Both primate and human studies have shown inappropriate handling of blood
sugar; trans fatty acids decrease the response of the red blood cell to
insulin, thus having a potentially undesirable effect in diabetics. The primate
research was initiated at Maryland in collaboration with the U. S. Department
of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health, and the human research is
from the University of Pittsburgh and quite recent.
One major concern is that trans fatty acids adversely affect immune response by
lowering efficiency of B cell response and increasing proliferation of T cells.
This was shown in research done at Maryland using a mouse model and although
there are reports from clinicians that there are problems of immune dysfunction
in humans it still needs to be evaluated systematically in humans.
Recent research from outside the U. S. has indicated that trans fatty acids
interfere with reproductive attributes and of concern is the finding that trans
fatty acids lower the amount of cream (volume) in milk from lactating females
in all species studies including humans, thus lowering the overall quality
available to the infant. The latter research was done at Maryland by my
colleague Dr. Beverly Teter.
Basically, trans fatty acids cause alterations to numerous physiological
functions of biological membranes that are known to be critical for cell
homeostasis, e.g., appropriate membrane transport and membrane fluidity, and
these fatty acid isomers produce alterations in adipose cell size, cell number,
lipid class and fatty acid composition.
Passwater: Now that trans fats are becoming of more interest, the term may
still just be a buzz word to many of our readers. Would you explain just what
are trans fats? Where do they come from? How are they formed?
Enig: To understand what trans fatty acids are you have to understand what
fatty
acids are. Fatty acids are basically chains of carbon with a carboxyl group
(COOH) at one end that can react (e.g., combine) with another molecule. When
fatty acids are in fats or oils they are combined with glycerol in the
proportions of three fatty acid molecules to one glycerol molecule and they
form triacylglycerols or in common terminology, triglycerides.
Fatty acids come in different chain lengths ranging from three carbons long
(propionic acid) to 24 carbons long (lignoceric acid). These fatty acids are
either "saturated" (with an adequate number of hydrogen atoms) and chemically
stable, or they are "unsaturated" (missing adequate hydrogens) and chemically
unstable. If a fatty acid is missing two hydrogens, it is called a
monounsaturated fatty acid, and in place of the two hydrogens, the adjacent
carbons "double" bond to each other. If the fatty acid is missing four or six
or more hydrogens, it is called a polyunsaturated fatty acid, and it is even
more unstable than the monounsaturated fatty acid. Because the double bonds in
naturally occurring plant oil fatty acids are curved with a "cis"
configuration, the fatty acids cannot pack into a crystal form at normal
temperatures so their presence produces a liquid oil. Saturated fatty acids
have a straight configuration and can pack into a solid crystal at normal
temperatures.
If the unsaturated fatty acids are altered by partial hydrogenation to
straighten the chains so that they have some of the physical packing properties
of saturated fatty acids they have had their "cis" double bond changed to a
"trans" double bond and they turn a technically mostly unsaturated oil into a
solid fat. The trans fatty acids are the same length and weight as the original
"cis" fatty acid they were formed from, and although they have the same number
of carbons, hydrogens, and oxygens they are shaped differently in space. The
term that is used is that they are "isomers." The problem arises when a large
number of the trans fatty acids are consumed from foods and they are deposited
in those parts of the cell membranes that are supposed to have either saturated
fatty acids or "cis" unsaturated fatty acids; under these circumstances the
trans fatty acids essentially foul up the "machinery."
Although the trans fatty acids are chemically "monounsaturated" or
"polyunsaturated" they are considered so different from the "cis"
monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids that they cannot be legally
designated, e.g., monounsaturated for purposes of labeling. Most of the trans
fatty acids produced by the partial hydrogenation process are chemically
monounsaturates.
There have always been small amounts of one kind of trans fatty acids in the
human diet from the ruminant fats (dairy, sheep, goat, deer, buffalo, antelope,
etc.) because the microorganisms in the rumen try to get rid of the
polyunsaturated fatty acids that are found in the plant foods eaten by these
animals. In the early days of trans fatty acid research, the researchers
assumed that the trans fatty acids found in ruminant fats were no different
than those produced by partial hydrogenation in the factory. But the studies
showed that not only was the amount much smaller (e.g., the fat in butter might
be 2-3% of the ruminant trans), the effect on the "machinery" in the cell
membranes was not different than without the trans. Yet all studies feeding the
trans produced by partially hydrogenating the vegetable oils showed the adverse
effect on the cell "machinery."
Passwater: Why are trans fats a problem?
Enig: The various mechanisms through which the trans fatty acids disrupt
function are related in part to the ability of trans fatty acids to inhibit the
function of membrane related enzymes such as the delta-6 desaturase resulting
in decreased conversion of e.g., linoleic acid to gamma-linolenic acid or
arachidonic acid; interference with the necessary conversion of omega-3 fatty
acids to their elongated tissue omega-3 fatty acids; and escalation of the
adverse effects of essential fatty acid deficiency. This latter effect was
shown especially by the work of Dr. Holman and his colleagues at the Hormel
Institute at the University of Minnesota, the other effects have been shown by
many researchers including the University of Maryland researchers.
Passwater: What were your early findings and what got you interested in this
area of research?
Enig: My initial published research in 1978 when I was at the University of
Maryland showed that trans fatty acids, which were increasing in the food
supply at the time and which had not been catalogued in any of the food data
tables, were the very factors that explained the positive statistical
relationship between the increase in cancer mortality and vegetable fat
consumption in the U. S.
It was clear from the literature that once the trans fatty acids were
identified as products of partial hydrogenation and studies were engaged in,
there were a number of earlier researchers who questioned the biological safety
of the trans fatty acids viz a viz their relationship to both cancer and heart
disease. In fact, Dr. Ancel Keys had originally claimed that the partially
hydrogenated vegetable oils with their trans fatty acids were the culprits in
heart disease. This was in 1958, and the edible oils industry was very swift in
their squelching of that information; they shifted the emphasis to "saturated"
fat and started the phoney attack on meat and dairy fats.
Passwater: What have others added to your findings?
Enig: As you have noted in some of your writings, we at the University of
Maryland were not the first to raise the issue of trans fatty acids and adverse
health effects; Dr. Fred Kummerow from the University of Illinois, Dr. George
Mann from Vanderbilt University, and Dr. Edward Pinckney with the American
Medical Association had sounded the alarm many years before my plunge into the
foray. In fact, I had drawn heavily on the research findings of Dr. Kummerow
and the informative writing of Dr. Mann when I first started to investigate
what was known about health effects of trans fatty acids at the time. Our
research findings have been duplicated by others, but more importantly other
independent researchers have extended and explained many of our findings and
concerns.

One product that I've found, that may help is called Cell Guard
1-800-235-8991 http://www.cellguard.com/ which is 97% effective in
blocking harmful emissions from cell phones. To reach 100%, get a
headset, so that the phone isn't next to your head. With the headset,
it'd be safer for driving (although I'd never use it for that), since
it's hands free and only one ear is covered.

Cell phones causing Hypothyroidism ?
Moderate cell phone usage was shown to lower serum TSH
(thyroid stimulating hormone - a pituitary hormone) by an
average of 21% after three weeks. Cell phones were used
only 2 hours per day, 5 days per week, by male volunteers.
The test ended after the lowered TSH was observed for one
week (the fourth week of the test).
More 'testing' is currently being conducted on millions of
adults and children, around the world -- without their
awareness or permission -- and without planned monitoring
or treatment of any resulting lowered thyroid function.
Should an invisible epidemic of hypothyroidism result from
this microwave radiation experiment, secondary symptoms of
depression, obesity, arthritis, etc., will continue to
'mysteriously' increase.
Similarly, no known warnings, monitoring, or care are
planned for the growing tens of thousands of people living
near the rapidly increasing numbers of cell-phone microwave
antenna towers. These 'guinea-pig people' are now being
involuntarily irradiated with continuous floods of
microwaves, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year, year after year.
This flood of microwaves is expected to grow exponentially
in total power during the coming decade, as high-speed,
broadband, wireless, "always-on" internet appliances become
more common than telephones. Neighbors' appliances will
radiate families through their walls, floors, and ceilings.
Outside microwave signals will be beamed directly through
your home, your body, and through your brains, so as to
follow the shortest and cheapest route to their target.
Not to worry, we are told there are no known health risks.
The study showing cell phone use significantly reduces the
pituitary output of TSH was published in Bioelectromagnetics,
volume 19, pages 271-278. It was deceptively titled:
"GSM radiocellular telephones do not disturb the
secretion of antepituitary hormones in humans".

significantly reduces the pituitary output of

A spectrum of endocrine responses has been tested in male
volunteers chronically exposed to GSM cell phone fields
2 h/day, 5 days/week for one month [de Seze et al., 1998].
Endpoints included serum adrenocorticotropin, thyrotropin,
growth hormone, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and follicle
stimulating hormone. The only significant change was a 21
percent decrease in thyrotropin concentration in the fourth
week of phone use but recovered completely within two weeks
of completion of exposure.

Dear Robin:
Thyroid dysfunction has EVERYTHING to do with weight problems.
If you are serious about losing weight, here are some suggestions for you
1-access www.hacres.com download their Hallelujah Diet data.
You may not be in harmony with their biblical teachings, if not, ignore
them. The nutritional data is supreme. Get their newsletter and read about
the hundreds of people who have lost tons of weight [collectively] on the
Hallelujah Diet.
2-Even the best diet will only lost some weight unless thyroid dysfunction
is corrected.
Access www.thyrodine.com and go to the THYRODINE Protocol.
If you will do the Thyrodine Protocol, which means eliminating all
pathogenic organisms, restoring gut function, normalizing hormone balance
[fat cells create enormous quantities of estrogen...which of itself fosters
weight gain]
and get a truly advanced concentrated nutritional powders, you may see the
elusive weight loss results you desire.
Best wishes,
Earl

I thought I'd share a nutritionist's site I found. I haven't read it all,
but she has some informative things to say in the Thyroid section and about
supplements in general. I think she sells her consultation services but I'm
referring you only to the information she shares at the site.

Have a nice day; I'm off to my endocrinologist today to report the return
(once again) of my hypo symptoms. I've been successful with Synthroid for 6
months, but all the symptoms are back. I am hoping she'll give me some T3
(Cytomel) to go along with, or let me try the T3/T4 combo (Armour).

So, I am a new BAD member. I have had hypothroidism for about 3 years
now, I have not really studied or even know about hypothroidism other
than the fact that I have to take 150mg of eltroxin every day or my
fingers, and legs go numb, and if I don't take it, I can fall asleep
standing up pretty well. Other than that, I am pretty much ignorant
to the whole thing.
Oh yea, let me tell you how my dr discovered I was hypo. I went into
see him because I had been on every diet in the book and was honestly
sticking to them, and I couldn't lose weight.
Now I am thinking about having Weight Loss Surgery because I weigh
270lbs, and my husband thinks it has to do with my thyroid.....Do you
think my weight has anything to do with my thyroid???
Thank you in advance for your help.

The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a
"Honk If You Love Jesus" bumper sticker. I was feeling
particularly sassy that day after coming from an exhilerating choir
performance, so
I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did! What
an uplifting experience that followed! I was stopped at a red light at a
busy intersection, just thinking about how wonderful the
Lord is and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It's a good thing
someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I never would have
noticed the light!
I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! While I was sitting
there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out
of his window and screamed, "For the love of GOD! GO! GO! Jesus Christ,
GO!" What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!
Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and
started waving and smiling at all those lovely people. I even honked my
horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from
Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a "sunny
beach. "I saw another gentleman waving in a funny way with only his
middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my teenage grandson in the back
seat what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign
or something.
Well, I've never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the
window and gave him the good luck sign back.
My grandson burst out laughing...why, even he was enjoying this
religious experience! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of
the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards
me. I bet they wanted to ask me what church I attended, but this is when I
noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all my sisters and
brothers
and drove on through the intersection. I noticed I was the only car that got
through before the light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had
to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down,
leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign
one last time as I drove away.
Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks! --Grandma

Can Thyrodine be taken with prescribed thyroid medication, or does it replace

take? How's this work?

To My Child......
Just for this morning, I am going to smile when I see your face and laugh
when I feel like crying. Just for this morning, I will let you wake up
softly, all rumpled in your sheets and I will hold you until you are ready
for the day. Just for this morning, I will let you choose what you want to
wear, and smile and say how perfect it is. Just for this morning, I am going
to step over the laundry, and pick you up and take you to the park to play.
Just for this morning, I will leave the dishes in the sink, and let you
teach me how to put that puzzle of yours together. Just for this afternoon,
I will unplug the telephone and keep the computer off, and sit with you in
the back yard and blow bubbles. Just for this afternoon, I will not yell
once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream and whine for the ice cream
truck, and I will buy you one if he comes by. Just for this afternoon, I
wont wory about what you are going to be when you grow up, or second guess
every decision I have made where you are concerned. Just for this afternoon,
I will let you help me bake cookies, and I wont stand over you trying to fix
them. Just for this afternoon, I will take you to McDonalds to buy us both a
Happy Meal so you can have both toys. Just for this evening, I will hold you
in my arms and tell you a story about how you were born, and how much I love
you. Just for this evening, I will let you splash in the tub and not get
angry. Just for this evening, I will let you stay up late while we sit on
the porch and count all the stars. Just for this evening, I will snuggle
beside you for hours, and miss my favorite TV show. Just for this evening,
when I run my fingers through your hair as you pray, I will simply be
greatful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given. I will think
about the mothers who are searching for their missing children, the mothers
who are visiting their childrens graves instead of their bedrooms, and
mothers who are in hospital rooms watching their children suffer
senselessly, and screaming inside that they cant handle it anymore, and when
I kiss you goodnight, I will hold you a little tighter, a little longer. It
is then that I will thank God for you, and ask him for nothing, except one
more day.

Hello, I am new to the list. I am a SAHM of four kids of my own and 2
step-children. My own are 13, 11, 4, and a 6 month old home-birthed,
nursling. My step-sons are 16 and 20 years old. We always have a very full
dinner table! :) And we very much like it that way!
We home/un-school the children for the last year. We are so much happier
and wish we had known we had the option a long time ago.
We recently moved to Vancouver, WA from Phoenix due to a job transfer.
Before that, we were in Ohio. Moving a lot is just another good reason to
school the kids at home. :)
I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and getting in some very enjoyable
computer-time!

questions on Thyrodine

2006-12-22 04:17:04

Hi Earl.
I don't know if you got my last post about Thyrodine but I need answers
before I place an order. I will take your advice to do the Epstein Barr
protocol for both my husband and I....I have it, he doesn't but I will treat
him as such.
QUESTION: After I treat both him and I...how long does that take? THEN we
take the thyrodine?
QUESTION: He does NOT take any medication for anything, but I take ONGOING
medications, including lithium which eventually affects the thyroid. I will
not go off of these meds but am trying to help myself holistically with
Supergreen foods, vitamins, etc. HOW long do I take the thyroine as opossed
to my husband or is my treatment going to be different? I would like to get
off synthroid, am on a very low dose of .05 mg.
Thanks alot!
Susie

Jean,
I am currently taking it and on my bottle (liquid) it says 3 drops twice a

in just the water. And I take it with immunogard, same way (12 drops).
Hope this helps.

Synthroid...

2006-12-21 10:19:06

Hey guys,

When I first got on Synthroid, I lost weight & felt great....what has happened? I now have gained about 25 lbs, still doing the same as I was before, I also exercise & watch what I eat. The last time I had my thyroid checked the "Doc" said it was normal. Tonight when I took a shower, the hair is coming out again...I stay tired all the time....what can I do? Do I need to get the results of my last test, post them to you guys, & go from there? I'm open to suggestions. My closet is full of clothes that I CAN'T wear.....

Thank you Ann, Pam, Karla and Kip for your suggestions and support!---

Re:Armour

2006-12-21 00:20:09

Hi Joy and Ann
Who do you think funds doctors? Pharmaceutical companies pay for a lot of
stuff...
and where do you think they get their information? Those same
pharmaceutical companies who have NOTHING to gain by your doctor
prescribing Armour. It's way cheaper than the synthetics alternatives. I
wonder who put out the information about Armour being obsolete...
Way back in the dark ages before standardizing techniques, Armour was more
variable. However, now and for quite some time actually, armour is
standardized to the same tolerances as the synthetic preparations. So,
your doctors have not kept up with current information, for one thing.
Email Darryl Wesche, dwesche@..., and he will send you lots of
info about Armour and how it's processed.
What the doctors don't tell you is that Synthroid and the synthetic drugs
are not even approved by the FDA! They are currently undergoing
examination on their own merits....previously they were temporarily
accepted as a piggyback...they claimed they were not a new drug, just a
reformulation of Armour! Because of various problems, they are now being
forced to apply on their own merits! Drug companies had to submit the
applications last year, and approval, if given, will happen this year or
next! I would not trust Synthroid at all, as you may know there is a class
action suit against them, because they hired some researcher to prove their
preparation was "better" than others marketed, and the research showed it
was not. They moved to hide the research and prevent it's publication, all
the while charging more for their brand, claiming it was better. Now
they're having to repay customers who filed a class action suit against
them. I do not want to do business with a company as dishonest as that.
Also, I've read research that people using synthetic preparations are more
likely to have side effects, such as kidney problems, panic attacks,
depression and hair loss.
I could go on and on, but the point is here, 1. Don't believe everything
your doctor tells you. He may be misinformed or have received biased
information. Always ask for sources of information and check them out. 2.
No one cares more for how you feel than you do. Don't accept less than
feeling really well. 3. Educate yourself. You will be your own best
advocate. 4. If one doctor doesn't listen or isn't willing to work for
you, fire them, and get one who will.

Re: Armour thyroid

2006-12-20 20:06:58

Joy -
I expected him to
I don't have any articles, but I do know that, in general, the medical
profession doesn't prefer to use Armour, but I think all of us are stumped
as to why.
It provides T4 and T3 and most people who have a choice feel better on
Armour than on synthetic thryroid which Synthroid is.
Many doctors say that it is obsolete, but I suspect that's a drug company
push as much as anything.
Armour is manufactured by Forrest Pharmaceuticals and is still manufactured
by the old 'grain' method which may not coincide with the more common 'mg.'
type way that most drugs are manufactured.
However, as someone who has been a health food nut much of my life and still
has a failed thyroid, Armour has made my life a great deal more pleasant. I
was accidentally given a snythetic substitute on a few occasions by a less
than scrupulous pharmacy, and I felt AWFUL on it.
Best,
Karla

Nutrition is the cure/cause?

2006-12-19 18:30:51

Earl,
I am not a doctor and have not studied nutrition but I do take exception to
your post. Almost by mistake, my doctors recently found that I was *very*
hypothyroid. I eat *extremely* well, take supplements several times a day
and have had five of your six items in place in my life for many years (with
the exception of the kelp). My doctor ran several screens to determine
that I have been doing an *excellent* job and have NO deficiencies and NO
excesses of anything in my nutritional program.
In my case, I mentioned something to my gynecologists that I was still
actively lactating 18 months after weaning my last child. She ran several
tests on my pituitary and decided to run T3/T4/TSH just to see what those
numbers looked like. She personally called me at work to give me the
results and asked that I get myself to my family doctor as quickly as
possible.
My homeopathic/anthroposophic/naturopath/allopathic family doctor ran more
screens and told me if I hadn't been as healthy as I am, I would have been
terribly ill. In hindsight, I had noticed that my memory had been
deteriorating over the last few months and that my speech was often getting
slurred. I attributed this to winter doldrums and needing more sleep.
In my case, both my doctor and I are convinced that there is no
"nutritional" anything, no herbal remedy, no current *anything* other than
synthetic thyroid that would make a difference in my levels. My doctor did
not *guess* what would work. He knew my blood did not have thyroid hormones
in it and he knew that every other gland in my body was performing as it
should. Without conscientious doctors, I was very close to seeing the
extreme case symptoms that are rarely seen in this day and age.
My nutrition *helped* and I saw few symptoms until the very end but it did
NOT "cure". Nutrition is extremely important but making a blanket statement
that nutrition alone is the "cause" of an underactive thyroid would be
inaccurate and could very well put someone in danger.
~Heidi

RE: [hypothyroidism] Digest Number 224

2006-12-19 13:00:24

Hello list,
After getting very ill 12/01/99, I am feeling much better. I had been on the
Atkins diet and ingesting Nutrasweet products simultaneously, and, after 6
months, they took their toll. My nervous system started shivering, and my
immune system shut down. I got severe insomnia, lower back pain, RLS, and
all the symptoms of hypothyroidism and CFS.. The doctors gave me little
help, so I read up on the internet regarding nutrition and hypothyroidism. I
have been taking handfuls of supplements daily, and gave up caffeine and
alcohol.
I won't bore you with the list of supplements, but this week (after 5
months) I was able to quit all the RXs and pain relievers, and my RLS and
insomnia is gone. All that remains is a little lower back pain.
I thank you for all the info I received from this group, and will respond to
emails if you want the list of supplements I've been taking.

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone on this list has been given the following
combination of medications for treatment. My specialist has decided to
switch me from Thyrolar to a combination of Thyrolar-1 and Synthroid
together. He feels that if he increases the Thyrolar-2 it will be too much
T3 so he wants the additional T4 from Synthroid. I'm a little skeptical
but I know he's the doc and knows what he's doing.
I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Thank you.

2006-12-18 09:27:31

Hello List,
I went to my regular doctors today to get a refill to for a medication that I
take, but because it has been a number of years sense my last blood work up
with him, he ordered a number of different test. One of them is a Glucose
2hr PP. I know it is a test for your sugar, but the two hours has me
worried. If it's what I think it is, that would mean drinking a glucose
solution and waiting two hours for the test, right? I am hypoglycemic and I
don't want to do that one. The thought of being sick because of the sugar
has me stressing out. Is my assumption correct on what this test is?
On an up beat note, he also is doing a thyroid test. When he told me that, I
asked him if he would do me a favor and he said what? So as said would you
please do a T3 and T4 test to and he said sure! So I'm having that done to!

thyrolar and synthroid

2006-12-18 07:07:16

Hi everyone:
I was wondering if anyone on this list is on a combination treatment
of synthroid and thyrolar? My specialist was recently treating me
with synthroid and cytomel and my TSH didn't improve. So he recently
switched me to .050 of synthroid and thryolar-1. I asked him why he
didn't switch me over to thyrolar-2 and he said he didn't want me
taking too much T3 but felt I needed more T4.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or comments regarding
this treatment. Thank you.
PS -- this may be a duplicate message but I originally sent it to the
old email address hypothyroidism@onelist.com.

RE: [hypothyroidism] Armour and Calcium

2006-12-17 20:39:39

Dear Sharon:
Synthroid and Armour are both "replacement" "therapies!"
Hypothyroid is not a medical problem, it is a nutritional program. No one
with intact thyroid cells needs a "replacement."
The reason for simple hypothyroid is lack of:
1-iodine
2-zinc, B6, manganese, selenium, magnesium
3-all the other 'B' vitamins and minerals and trace minerals
4-the amino acids tyrosine, taurine, glutamine
When one supplies these nutrients, the thyroid will in a very short space of
time, like a few days, come back on stream and function normally. The
nutrients need to be continued for about 2 to 4 months to maintain function.
All this data can be accessed at www.thyroidne.com.
Best wishes,
Earl

Armour and Calcium

2006-12-17 16:48:06

I've heard that taking Synthroid contributes to calcium loss or
osteoporosis. Has anyone heard this? Does taking Armour do the same
thing?
Is it easier to ever get off of Armour thyroid than off of Synthroid?
I've heard that when people are on Synthroid, that the hormone stops
functioning and become more dependent on the Synthroid. Is this also
true of Armour?

RE: Questions about your products!

2006-12-15 17:43:08

Dear Rowdy:
You present a challenge!!
My suspicion is that you will need to make a number of changes before you
can achieve the health and weight reduction that you desire. But you gave up
cigarettes so you have the guts to do whats needed.
First of all, yes, the Thyrodine and ImmunoGuard do work for everyone, but
to the level that they use them correctly. Meaning...that for you, I suggest
this protocol:
1-adopt a reasonable nutritional program. You can't eat junk food or all
cooked food and expect to be functional. I have 2 suggestions for you
here....
a-access www.hacres.com here you'll find some very sane and workable
nutritional data. You'll also find some biblical data that you may wish to
ignore.
b-I can send you some nutritional data that you may find a bit easier to
handle.
2-I suspect that you may have some form of pathogenic organisms so I suggest
that you consider taking the ImmunoGuard at 12 drops in a full glass of
water 4x a day together with some form of Psyllium Hulls Complex that we can
have sent to you.
3-When you finish 7 to 10 days on the ImmunoGuard and Psyllium Hulls, then
you stop the ImmunoGuard an take a probiotic..or the correct intestinal
bacteria to restore proper gut function. These we can have sent to you also.
4-Then the Thyrodine will have a much better chance to restore your thyroid
function.
No, there are no side effects from nutritional remedies.
The ImmunoGuard and Psyllium Hulls you only need to take for 7 to 10 days.
The Thyrodine you'll need for probably 4 months.
Yes, the alcohol presents a huge problem. Each time you use alcohol you are
killing a few liver cells and maybe a brain cell or two. To achieve your
purpose in life, its fairly essential to have a functioning liver and a
clear mind.
I'd also suggest that each day you resolve to get out of your vehicle and
walk at least a 1/2 mile, preferably in some nice isolated spot with fresh
air.
Men at 60 begin to be candidates for heart and prostate hassles. If you'll
really read Rev Malkmus' data and utilize this protocol, you'll likely find
that you may be able to eliminate blood pressure pills. Remember its drugs
that kill most people!!
If any of this makes sense to you let me know and I'll calculate costs for
you.
All the very best wishes,
Earl

Hi all;
Is anyone on this list taking Thyrodine? If so, does it work? Can it be
purchased at health food stores? Are there any side effects? Please, any
other information you can tell me would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
