what am i supposed to do?

2008-10-31 16:40:14

i have posted before the fact that i am still under my parents care
and health insurance so i am limited in what doctors i go to. my
mom keeps agreeing with me that something about my current
thyroid medications aren't right. my tests keep coming back
"perfect...couldn't be more great than they are" says my dr. but i
still feel like crap-cramps in my neck and legs mostly, still the
whole energy stuff, high blood pressure, and other crap that
goes along with being hyper. i do think that normal for me is
more at the lower end of the range, the dr. apparently doesn't.
altho mom agrees with me, she won't do anything about it. i keep
complaining to her, she just kinda throws her hands up and
says whatever, sometimes you just have to grin and bear it.
GRRR...that pisses me off so much. i DO REALIZE i don't have to
live feeling like crap thru my whole college career. i still have
nearly 5 semesters ahead of me at least to go. how do i
convince my mom that maybe i do need to go see a different dr?
i'm currently not seeing an endo b/c there's only one in my town
and we've already tried him-he seemed pretty stupid about the
subject, so this is just a family dr. i'm seeing. i am 3 hours away
from the nearest endo and i have no car. any suggestions would
certainly be appreciated.

Hi Guys, Just some feed back please, I have been going through hell over the
last year and does this make sense.
About October 2002, I found that I started to get cramps in my legs wrists and
neck. It got really bad and after seeing five drs I was finally put on 20MCR of
T2 and 125 per day of T4. I was just getting by and then I found a piece that
you should not eat anything with the thyroxin.
I had started about the time I became ill having Cornflakes and milk with my
tablets.
I stop this and boy the Thyroxin hit me like a rocket fuel. so I thought thats
the problems and I should be ok now. I now find that I am a lot better but on
waking I am still getting slight cramp in my neck and legs. If I take a strong
MulitVit it gets a little bit better but its still there.
What is strange I can not tolerate this dose of T3 any more It make me short of
breath. I also feel cold in my back all the time I am going to try a few days on
Armour and see how that goes.
My Endo has taken lots of bloods and she think my Testosterone iis low can that
cause this.
Many thanks
JOHN C UK

Re: [hypothyroidism] My Tests

2008-10-30 16:21:06

HI Anita!!Glad to see ya!! When I was first put on thyroid they started
me on .050 T4 and then when I tested again they put me on .075 T4.I
would feel better for about three weeks and then worse again, until I was
put on the combo.so you can try upping the T4 and it may help you and
then go for the combo if it doesn't help. Some people are fine on just
T4.I am a true believer in T4/T3.

My Tests

2008-10-30 04:49:32

The Nurse just called me with my blood test results. I am still waiting
for the Bile Acids but I have all the others. I am very upset over this.
So if you can email as soon as possible I would appreciate it. I am
waiting for the Doctor to call me. Can b e any time today.
First the Cholesterol is the highest it has ever been.
The total is 281, with a range to 199. So this is bad., Triglycerides
are 263, with a range to 149 also bad.
HDL is good at 49, with a range to 59. This is good. LDL is 179 with a
range to 99. Also bad.
LDL/HDL Ratio is 3.6 with a range of going up to 3.2
Now to the Thyroid.
TSH is 3.080 with a range to 5.50 but this should be 1 or 2 right? Free
T4 1.29 with a range to 1.76 Culd be better right? Free T3 is 3.4 with a
range to 4.2 so I am in the middle here.
So now do you think I should try just increasing the Levoxyl to 0.075
mcg from the 0.050 I am now taking and see what happens or go to the
Armour. I am nervous because I get such bad reactions from things and
don't want the Armour unless it really shows I need it. I was thinking
to try this 0.075 and then get retested and also the cholesterol. I have
never had such high cholesterol.
One thing I have reduced my estrogen and I bet this also has something
to do with this. So maybe I have to use more now.
Please give me any feedback thanks!
The chem panel was fine all in normal limits.
Anita
PS I am on digest so if anyone wants to email me please do.

post nasal drip and rhinitis

2008-10-28 17:47:24

I found these items on the web regarding rhinitis and post nasal drip
on the web.
Although not a really common symptom, it can be caused by
hypothyroidism. -------
There are several causes of nonallergic rhinitis without
inflammation/inflammatory cells. Endocrine changes of hypothyroid and
hyperthyroid disease, and pregnancy can lead to unremitting nasal
congestion. Damage to sympathetic nerves, as in Horner's syndrome,
can ablate sympathetic vasoconstrictor tone and lead to unopposed
vasodilatory parasympathetic reflexes and chronic nasal congestion.
Overuse of topical adrenergic agonists/ nasal decongestants also
leads to chronic nasal congestion ("rhinitis medicamentosa").
Some persons may experience symptoms of rhinitis when hormonal
imbalances occur (eg, pregnancy, hypothyroid states, puberty, oral
contraceptive use, conjugated estrogen use). Estrogens are believed
to cause an increase in hyaluronic acid in the nasal mucosa. Initial
presentation of hormonal rhinitis in pregnancy usually occurs during
the second month, continues through the duration of pregnancy, and
ceases following delivery. In patients with hypothyroidism, edema
increases in the turbinates as a result of thyrotropic hormone
release. Nasal congestion and rhinorrhea are the chief presenting
symptoms in hormonal rhinitis
Hormonal rhinitis is caused by hormonal imbalances such as
pregnancy, hypothyroid states, puberty, and oral contraceptive use,
conjugated estrogen use.------
My GP and my ENT docs don't seem to think that it can. So why are we
surprised about that?!!

Hi I'm new

2008-10-28 14:51:34

Hello I'm Beth I just joined the list and read a bit of the archives.
I usually don't post on my first day, but today I'm anxious to jump
right in.
I was diagnosed low thyroid after having my first child, although I
suspect I was subclinical long before that. I've since had my
diagnosis taken away and told I was nuts, basically, lol, and about a
year and a half ago convinced a naturopath to test my antibodies and
sure enough they were high, so now I have a Hashi's diagnosis, and the
paper to prove it, and no one can take my thyroid medication away again!!
My naturopath has me on a very low dose of t4 .075 I believe -
(Unithroid is the one I take now) and a specially compounded
time-release t3. Once I tried to get a conventional doctor to
prescribe the special t3 for me, so I could stop paying the naturopath
$220 an hour just to talk to him on the phone, and the MD told me I
would have to see the Psychiatrist.
I am here because I don't feel well, although I'm progressing in my
ability to take care of myself, and I need to be with people who
understand the 'inability to lose weight' issue. I am a dancer and
this issue has had a profound affect on me. If one more person tells
me that all I need is a good diet and exercise program I'm going to
scream. I take Tae Kwon do with my kids 4 times a week, and teach
dance classes twice a week, and my diet is pretty impeccable, there's
not a whole lot there I haven't tried eliminating or adding, and I'm
well supplemented with nutritional products that have been tested on
me with biomedical feedback. Still my weight doesn't budge and I
don't think there's anything else left for me to try. Except maybe
massive lyposuction, which I would never do to myself! I'm determined
to prove to the world that there is more to weight loss than diet and
exercise, because I'm doing all of that right and I still can't lose.
Thank you for listening. I'm happy to be here.
Beth

Karen

HI, I just found your board. . . low thyroid

2008-10-27 11:42:40

hi,
I finally got an 'abnormal' TSH test after years of complaing to
dr's. I've got low thyroid - the TSH test was 4.9 or so
when 'normal' was something like 0.9 - 4.5. I guess I should have
been researching all this years ago on my own! I just about cried
when I read through the last few weeks posts here. I have all these
symptoms too. Tired, itchy, brain fog!, muscle aches!, irritablity!,
tired, insomnia!, depressed! and did I mention tired?
I started feeling tired and run-down as a sophmore in high school
and have pretty much felt that way ever since and I'm 33 now.
Chronic back and headaches (mild, but it wears you down) pretty much
all the time. I felt a little better when I was learned to swim in
college - the excercise helped some those years, but not enough.
The last couple of years I've been worse. Brain fog is pretty bad
some days. After having my kids (they are 5 and 3), I knew something
was wrong. At first I researched depression (spent a year on anti-
depressants and got off them with homeopathy), and then fibromyalgia
when that didn't work; decided that the FM was too weird a
diagnosis. That's when last week, I got up the energy to pitch a fit
at the dr. to do more testing. They did, hoping to just shove some
fibromyalgia pamphlets at me - only to find the TSH was high. I
haven't been able to get a copy of the test results yet. Will try
tommorrow when I see a gyn for the regular physical. I was
prescribed Synthyroid, but from what I'm hearing, that really doesn't
work alone.
I'd like to try something other than just meds. I can always take
the meds if something else doesn't work. I had a tough time
convincing drs to tell me how to safely quit anti-depressants. I'd
expect the same if I started thyroid meds. I'm looking at trying
some 'far-out' stuff - Homeopathy, organotherapy and stuff. I saw
the nutritional information and will be researching that. Mesa,
someone mentioned. Flax seed oil. Hubby is insulin-dependent, so we
eat OK already because we have to.
I've been complaining about the tiredness thing for so many years
with no help I have developed a pretty sour view of traditional
medical folks. . . I could vent on that subject!
OK this is getting long. Sorry, but it's nice to write about all
this. Good way for me to organize my thoughts before seeing a dr
tommorrow, too.
So, I guess I'm bracing myself to do battle with the medical
profession. Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome! I've
appreciated you folks who have written in with your experiences and
thoughts, too. Very informative! I'll read through more of your
archives.

Friend recently diagnosed w/ hypothyroidism--CRAMPS!!!

2008-10-27 08:46:12

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me WHY being hypothyroid causes muscle cramps? My
best friend was recently diagnosed as being hypothyroid (about a week
ago now) as a result of extremely painful leg and arm cramps. She
started the hormone replacement Saturday, and thought earlier today
that her legs were beginning to feel better, but they started
cramping up again this afternoon. She needs to get off the muscle
relaxers and pain killers because she has a couple of young
children. I know it'll take a while for everything to get back
to "normal" but is there anything else she can do for the muscle
spasms? She can't even walk and is only 40 yrs old, using a
walker!!! Would Gatorade help?
Thanks for any suggestions and info.

trying to get my calcium in many smaller doses throughout the week. One
thing I've been experimenting with lately is mineral ascorbate Vitamin C.
Did you know that you can get calcium as a side benefit from taking a mineral
ascorbate? I didn't either until a few weeks ago. Another thing I've been
doing is increasing my daily intake of fresh vegetables to a minimum of five
half-cup servings per day. I try to get more if I can. (It started with
Weight Watchers but now it's a habit I enjoy and I feel healthier from it!)
I did a search on the calcium content of vegetables and came up with these

About three times a week I make a breakfast smoothie with pineapple juice and
blended veggies--celery, parsley, tomato, barley green powder, mineral

hello, I was wondering.... is there anyone here who doesn't eat/drink dairy?
If so, what do you do to get your calcium, especially since we can't have
some of the dark leafy veggies that are rich in calcium. I'm drinking rice
milk which has some, but I used to eat a lot of yogurt and that's where I
got most of my calcium. I'm concerned because I'm nursing - I also have to
make sure I get enough B12. thanks for any imput :)

RE:Post nasal and lumps

2008-10-25 23:47:16

Hello,
I am on Armour 120 mg. I was on synthyroid and didn't do well on that
at all.
Yes,very little if any at all. I was post nasal drip and then the doc would
try to put me on meds that would lock up my throat(antihistimines)It was an
awful time but until I was regulated, the drip was present.
When I was trying to recieve correct dosage it was always there.
It was more like I couldn't swallow and when I did I would actually have
terrible sharp pains as it went down, at the front of my throat.
Especially if it was bulky like spaghetti.
Now,as long as I don't eat too much of those foods (also tomato sauces) I'm
ok. If I react I take one dose of Bededryl. I'm relieve very soon after
that. It is not all the time. Sometimes if I really get over stressed I have
a tightness. NERVES.
I was diagnosed with Thyroiditis two years ago. I was put on an anti-
immflamitory drug (short term) to reduce swelling. It worked great!
This is a difficult condition but there is hope. Much of my symptoms that I
had 7 years ago are gone today. I was told I had arthritis and post nasal
drip, clinically depressed and obese. Live with it! It was awful to be told
that.I am on an anti-depressant, and I still have trouble with my weight BUT
I am so much more active. I go to the gym 3 times a week and stay up all
day! Amazing!
Keep at it and fight for your health! Be kind and don't forget to cry when a
doctor lets you down. Just go to someone else. (Easier said then done!)
Sincerely,
Kim

Hi. I recently saw an endocronologist and asked her about goitrogens. She
said that because my thyroid is no longer functioning at all (due to a
hashimoto's burnout over 13 years ago), I do not have to worry about
goitrogenic foods. Given that I am peri-menopausal, she said that eating soy
and flaxseed would be beneficial and not harmful to an already
non-functioning thyroid. Sharon

Also, I use a spread made by Brummel and Brown that is supposedly made out of

I had surgery on 1/8 (had half my thyroid out) and feel LOUSY -

But my understanding is it takes weeks, if not months, to bounce

likely change at the next blood test since my TSH is rapidly going
down (thank goodness). My big problem is lack of patience ;-)
Guess others may ask these questions also...how long ago was your

I'm new to the group and I'm in desperate need of help.
The charity hospital I go to for treatment has wronged me. They
removed half my thyroid instead of a needle biopsy. Then, they never
bothered to tell me what was wrong. I found out my diagnosis when I
ordered my medical records. When I demanded treatment for my disease,
they now require extra bloodwork and a sonogram of my heart. They
want to put me on anti-depressants. Nobody seems to want to fix the
underlying problem: Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
In a nutshell, I have reason to believe that I will never recieve
quality care for a misunderstood and often overlooked disorder at the
charity hospital. I need a doctor in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area
who is willing to see me even though I cannot pay. I am a college
student without parents and my money goes to rent and school. I have
been declining since the surgery last January and I don't know how
much longer I can take this.

surrounding them. I would be curious, though, to see if this company does
grow the green tea leaves in a hothouse. Then, green tea would truly been a
boon to hypothyroids! A little jolt of caffeine without the downer of the
fluoride! :)
Do you experience any unpleasant side effects from the tea? Aching in your

I just had 1/2 my thyroid out on Jan. 8th and am trying to deal

I can't stand the drip and the lumpy feeling! What meds are you on?

Dear Karen,
This is the one of the things that bugs me about his book! While it may be
true that supplementing with iodine in some Type Os will help them regulate
their thyroid, for me it's the opposite! I get a lot more hypo symptoms,
especially my eyes hurting, if I take supplemental iodine. And this is AFTER
haveing allergy to iodine cleared and years of abstaining from supplemental
iodine in any form.
I think the general idea that different foods are better for different blood
types is good, but the specifics of his blood type diet don't seem to work
for me. For instance, I am able to cut down on stomach aches and heartburn
drastically by avoiding wheat and corn, which he says are bad for Type Os.
But one thing that has always helped me is aloe juice, which he also said is
bad for Os. After a period of abstinence from aloe, I went back to it
recently and it really settles down my blood sugar and my food cravings.
He also says that Type Os need to eat broccoli, spinach, cabbage, etc., which
are such known goitrogens and suppressive of the thyroid that I just can't
understand how he can say they are helpful to Type Os when he also knows we
have natural low thyroid function. Plus, he states that flaxseed is highly
beneficial for Type Os. But flax is very high in phystoestrogens which
suppresses thyroid function again. These inconsistencies make his advice
seem nonsensical and contradictory to me!

I had a terrible time with sinus until I had the correct thyroid
medication.
As for lumps, I can't eat broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage (especially
saurkraut) or I would swell up to a very uncomfortable state. I take a
little benedryl to lessen the effect. This can be an allergic reaction.

What if they are organically grown/procecced? I've heard the flouride

Hi everyone, I'm reading the book "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type". I really
love this book. The author says that type O's are prone to thyroid
dysfunction (and autoimmune disease) b/c inadequate levels of iodine. I've
heard conflicting things about that. What are your thoughts on this??

Do you have any information about it ???

undesirable (but a new diet plan???ha) plus the drip tickles and
makes me cough a lot. the dr. doesn't seem too concerned.
and oh yeah, just had another thyroid testing done-everything is
normal. he says my numbers can't get more perfect than they are.
meanwhile, i'm about to change drs b/c it's a load of crap-i feel

Hi:
New to the group. Have been hypothyroid for 25 years. Recently my

know that. Told me everything was "normal".
Since last September I have had a huge amount of post nasal drip and

Hello List,
Last week there was some discussion regarding a "miracle multi" vitamin somene

pertinent to that thread.
SaraLou
Health journalist Bill Sardi compiled a list of 25 desirable factors in a
multivitamin and went searching for the top brands. Here are the 2003 rankings
of the top brands of multivitamins published in the soon-to-be-released book THE
NEW TRUTH ABOUT VITAMINS & MINERALS by Bill Sardi. Or use the accompanying

Hi If celeste is looking in your 2c would be appreciated.
I have no thyroid so I am Hypo. I have been on the merry go round and now I
having come back form the Hospital and my Endo I am a little scared.
My symptoms are Calf cramsp, wrist cramps, stomach bloating, tiredness , brain
emptiness. feeling cold from with in. Yes not focusing.
All of these I have been informed are not Hypo conditions. at the last Dr I have
seen so I went to a Dr here is the UK who is not a Endo but treats people like
me.I was given t3 20mr per day and 125 mg of T4 My symptoms eased but now they
are returning. This seems to be when to be in the afternoon
about 2pm. I am taking an extra one hl of 25 mg and trying to get to a target
dose of 150mcr +t3 perday.
I have just been informed by my Endo that t3 and T4 studies show an increase in
Mortality on this regime especially with people with heart problems. I did have
AF but this was cured thank God.
. I have had a blood test taken and if my TSH is suppressed then they will
recommend coming down on the MEd. I honestly dont know how I will cope on this.
I am just praying that my TSH is not suppressed.
Two other things that came up they feel I maybe allergic to the filler in the
MEd, they have three patients like this and want to try me on a med that has to
be imported from the USA. This make sense as it feels that my meds are not being
synthesised in my body.
Also I know that my Tortestorone levels are very low, so they have Taken for
them again as this may be the caused, what would a low tostesterone cause in the
body.
They have given me quieene for the cramps but I am unhappy taking this as its
just treating the symptoms.
Another thing I was really stunned with ,Thyroxin can make you feel better even
if its not the cause of the problems and you can abuse it. Thats why some Drs
here in the UK are being shut down. I have never heard of this before
I am in a bit of a panic so any help would be nice. I need hand holding at the
moment
Best Regards
John C UK

Make your own thyroid stimulating herbal tea, my formula:
half pound organic ginger
3 organic cloves
5 organic all spice
organic lemon rind (just a couple of small pieces for taste and lemon oil)
put six cups of water in kettle and bring to boil
add the ingredients and let stew for a couple of minutes
keep kettle closed
if evening let sit overnight, refridgerate in morning
will last for a whole week
this is concentrated, so dilute as needed
Enjoy...all the herbs in this tea are metabolism boosters.
note: can add garlic cloves, but tea will ferment in a couple of days so drink
quickly.

Thank you for pointing this out to me! I haven't renewed my subscription from
last
year, so I've been buying them at the drug store and I'm often either missing
issues
or buying them right on top of each other, which is what happened with February

March. I just picked up March's issue last Friday, while I got February just 7
days
before that. So I was rushing through February and missed that article
completely. I
had read about Jenny Worth before and found her to be extremely influential, but
never did I know she lived in my neck of the woods! I don't think I have the
money
right now to join the gym she co-owns, but I am going to try to meet her
sometime
soon. I think I would be able to draw inspiration and strength from her, even if
we
are a bit too close in age for me to call her a mentor. She's definitely on my
list
of people, specifically women, I aspire to be like.
Thanks again!

Re: [hypothyroidism]awesome new multi-vit that helps metabolism!!!!

2008-10-16 20:48:51

HI LARKIN,JUST SAW THE AD ON TV ,I`LL HAVE TO TRY IT.HOW LONG BEFORE YOU FELT
ANY RESULTS?

Re: [hypothyroidism] new multi-vit

2008-10-16 11:42:42

This e-mail made me slightly afraid since that many pills offering assistance in
weight loss often contain stimulants, and what have you, which are not good for
people like us with thyroid disorders (anything that can cause heart
palpitations is
bad). So I looked up this product and came up with the following web page that
may
shed some light on this:
http://www.drugstore.com/qxp79402_333181_sespider/one_a_day/weight_smart_dietary\
_supplement_tablets.htm
It claims that it contains EGCG, which while I do not know a great deal about
it, I
am aware of the trial studies which claims that it has appetite suppressant
properties. It's a supplement that can be found in green tea, which I know
contains
a high concentration of caffeine, but like I said, I really don't know too much.
I'd
be willing to try this out if anyone can give me any positive encouragement. If
there's any negative reviews on this chemical, I'd definitely like to know about
it.
I'm very skeptical with energy type boosting supplements.
Just came back from my first endocrinologist visit in months due to our health
insurance changing the end of last year. Feel like poop, thyroid is still
unregulated, but at least they ordered another (I think this will be a 5th)
blood
test. Woo-hoo.
Just thought I'd throw that in there so everyone can be slightly updated on my
current status. I know that I've been lurking quite a bit recently.

There is a new multi-vitamin on the market that has ingredients that help your
metabolism to stay faster. It is made by One-A-Day and it is called Weight
Smart!!! I bought it and already I feel more energetic...initially it is
formulated for women 30 yrs. and older because supposedly that is when your
metabolism slows down so they made this to help to keep your metabo speedier,
but my mom bought it for me and I feel wonderful. So I highly advise you guys
to go check it out or ask your doctor about it. Take care everyone.

Re: [hypothyroidism] Canada and drugs

2008-10-15 11:38:14

Renee,

I think you misunderstood something in this story. Only one
pharmaceutical company, Glaxo-Smith-Kline, has threatened to stop
supplying drugs to Canadian pharmacies that ship to U.S. patients. I
doubt that this will have that much overall effect, except on specific
Glaxo products.
In the Canadian system, they automatically use generics whenever
possible, and this is one reason for the big savings. Some patents that
are still protected in the U.S. can have a legal substitute in Canada,
which helps lower the price. It also means that if Glaxo stops shipping
something, there will likely be a substitute manufacturer available to
immediately step into the breach. If not, there will still probably be
other ways for the pharmacies to get their hands on the drugs. They just
won't be able to go directly to Glaxo for them, and that will make it
cost a little more. U.S. prices are so high compared to Canada, though,
that it will still probably amount to a large savings.
The way it might get difficult is if ALL the drug manufacturers would
agree to stop shipping to Canadian pharmacies that sell in the U.S. That
is not at all likely, considering the size of the market. There would be
too much temptation to cheat.

Re: Oxygen Magazine Article

2008-10-14 05:41:23

Hi Mary,
I read that article too. I don't know if you read the whole thing,
but she said she eats, well I can't remember if it was 1400 or 1500
cals/day...year round!! And drops it by a couple hundred pre-
contest. Not to mention 2 hours of cardio daily, plus strength
training, gymnastics, and routine practice! Get real! That's pretty
unrealistic for the rest of us with actual lives.
It did make me feel a little better to know that she has to go to
those extremes to stay that way. I exercise 1-2 1/2 hours 6 days a
week, never eat fast food and try to keep it healthy most of the
time. I realized after reading that article that even the lengths I
go to aren't enough to be in the kind of shape I was in a few years
back, and that for a hypo that's ok. (Besides, my husband keeps
telling me that anyone who can run 12 miles just because they feel
like it has no room to complain!)
Cindy

new to the board

2008-10-14 01:08:46

Hi All~
I'm new to posting here, thought I'd introduce myself. (:
My name is Christine, I'm 33 tears old. For most of my 20's I was
hyper, really more borderline hyper, but enough so that endo wanted
to kill my thyroid. My primary doc disagreed - thinking that my
thyroid would "burn itself out", she'd seen this happen many times
before. Eventually, I went hypo. All of sudden I was very tired all
the time and gained a lot of weight. I didn't suspect hypo since I
had just quit smoking and went on a beta blocker - but my doc
suspected and tested me.
She put me on Armour, it worked ok for me, I was on it for about 6
months, but since I am trying to eliminate all animal products from
my diet, she switched me to Thyrolar. I've been on Thyrolar, 60 mg
for a while now (4, 5 months...) and I've got another test coming
up. The last test showed me in the normal range - a little low, but
normal nonetheless. I feel better now, but I feel I'm still a little
too tired, especially towards the end of my cycle. At the end of my
cycle I feel drugged, so tired I just cannot move.
I also still cannot lose weight. I'm a vegetarian - even if it
wasn't an ethical thing for me, I simply do not like the taste of
meat. I run 4 times a week and lift weights, too. Sigh.
I guess it's just got me down and I wanted to connect with others out
there with the same condition. I'm feeling better but I'm just not
where I want to be.
Peace to you all,
~Christine

75mcg of Levoxyl a month and a half ago. I still feel like SHIT, I don't
feel any better yet I took my blood last week and they said my numbers were
back to normal. I told my doc how I don't feel any better he said he still
wants to take it slow and said he's keeping me on the same amount for 6 more
months!!!! He also said that sometimes it takes up to 6 months so feel
results, so after these 6 mo. I still don't feel better then he said we'll
do more tests and re-evaluate how to go about this. But I don't want to
feel this way for 6 months damn it!!!! Now I know what you guys mean by
needing a doctor that will understand me. So we decided to do some
alternative things...my mom called and made me an appointment with a
wonderful homeopathist, when I was a kid I took homeopathics for other
health problems and my body responded SOOOO well to them, so we figured
maybe my body will respond better to this than the meds. I feel if the
doctor is going to keep me on the same regimin for sooooo much longer and I
don't feel better I might as well take another route so I can get my gear
into shape because I can't put up with this any longer. I'm 19 I should be
out and about with my friends and not worry about being sooo damn tired all
of the time. I totally understand now how frustrating this crap is. I was
bawling when I left the doctors office, because I still am so tired and have
ALL of the same symptoms I did when I was diagnosed, and I can't handle
feeling so out of balance anymore. I want to feel normal. Anyway I will keep
you guys posted after my new appointment with the homeopathist, which is
next week. I can't wait to go talk to the homeopathist doctor!!!!Thanks for
listening.

[hypothyroidism] UGH now I understand why doctors SUCK!!!

2008-10-13 11:50:52

Alright so I had my first meeting with my doctor. They had put me on 75mcg of
Levoxyl a month and a half ago. I still feel like SHIT, I don't feel any better
yet I took my blood last week and they said my numbers were back to normal. I
told my doc how I don't feel any better he said he still wants to take it slow
and said he's keeping me on the same amount for 6 more months!!!! He also said
that sometimes it takes up to 6 months so feel results, so after these 6 mo. I
still don't feel better then he said we'll do more tests and re-evaluate how to
go about this. But I don't want to feel this way for 6 months damn it!!!! Now
I know what you guys mean by needing a doctor that will understand me. So we
decided to do some alternative things...my mom called and made me an appointment
with a wonderful homeopathist, when I was a kid I took homeopathics for other
health problems and my body responded SOOOO well to them, so we figured maybe my
body will respond better to this than the meds. I feel if the doctor is going

Just received my updated blood test.
T4 0.8
T4 total 6.3

T4 free, calculate 1.73
TSH 1.76
Can anyone tell me if this is a good report
I still suffer from dry skin, and feel tired

i would like to share with all of you the following:
I visited my Dr.
My test reads TSH, 1.97 , Free T4: 0.97, total cholesterol 270
My sympthoms are Tireness, joint pain, difficult to sleep, hard
tummy, weight gain, mental fog.
Even my test reads ok .. My Dr decided to give me 50 mcg
levotiroxina because She thinks that T4 es being produced
BUT my body is not producing enough active elements from T4.
I am glad to see my Dr is trying to cure my body no my tests
Hope this is interesting for all of you.

Oxygen Magazine Article

In the February issue of Oxygen Magazine there's an article about
Jenny Worth, a competitive bodybuilder, who is hypo. She talks about
her low metabolism and how she has to work harder to keep up to
competition level. She talks a little about her diet (protein and
vegetables only - no fruit or grains). There's also some information
on thyroid disease and resources.
I don't see the February issue on the Oxygen website, but maybe it
will be up soon. Just nice to read a positive story about a woman
with this disease!.

You get hypothyroid from being pregnant which means you could have
been depressed or something like that down the line.

Hoping for some specific advice

2008-10-11 22:43:23

i was hoping for some specific advice. my doctor has been increasing
and decreasing my dose of levoxyll for the last year based on my
blood tests, and i've been slowing feeling better. here are my last
results: TSH : .02, T4 : 1.6 (normal is .8-1.8), and T3 (normal is
80- 181).
okay - so my TSH is low, but my T3 and T4 are normal. i thought that
would suggest that i should stay on my same dose. my doctor brought
up that T3 and T4 levels will fluctuate throughout the day, so just
because they were normal when my blood was drawn, that does not mean
that my levoxyll dose is right. they may have been high earlier in
the day - who knows. and tsh gives a more stable reading of my
thyroid hormone levels.
what she said makes sense! it sounds so convincing. for now - i'm
going to stay on the same dose and we're going to wait another 8
weeks to do another blood test - and then make a decision. if my
test results are the same, i know i'm going to be on the fence again
over what to do. hmmmmm - any thoughts?

Re: [hypothyroidism] Hoping for some specific advice

2008-10-11 21:09:28

The only accurate tests are for FREE T3 and FREE T4 (should be in the upper
quadrant). Tsh doesn't mean much, but how you feel does. It IS pretty
amazing that most tests are so useless, hope that will change soon. You can
look at www.thyroid.about.com for more on tests.

Preg??Hypo??

Hi there I just found out I was pregnant after trying for 3 years :)
but I was wondering if anyone has any info on hypo and pregnancy??my
GP doesn't seemd to be concerned with it??and I have heard otherwise??
is there a different group I can talk with?? TNX ~Ally~

Re: [hypothyroidism] Preg??Hypo??

Ally, congratulations!! I have a 3 month old and it's so fun. I have Mary
Shomon's book - Living with Hypo. There's a chapter in there on pregnancy
that's informative. I did tons of internet research and basically it said
that it's bad only when hypo is untreated.

Re: Tired...so tired!!!!

2008-10-10 20:37:51

Chris,
I don't know if this will help you since everyone is different but I
know that if I take CLA and L-glutamine together, I feel pretty
invigorated. Other than that, for depression, I HIGHLY recommend a
good fish oil or EFA, it does really help. Other than that, excercise
( I know I know..the fatigue) but just give your body 15 minutes a
day for a week and see how it feels, you'll be amazed.
Well, good luck to you on this.

Tired...so tired!!!!

2008-10-10 12:06:39

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to raise my
energy levels?? I have recently been diagnosed, and also it has led
to me suffering depression also.....But the lack of energy and
tiredness is starting to affect me in my job also. The last thing I
need right now is to be having problems at my work!! I have never had
this feeling of an almost complete lack of energy and I dont know how
to deal with it. I have only really just started taking my medication
so I Do understand it will probably take some time before I get to
feeling better!!
Thank you all and take care

Many of my friends and family members have
hypothyroidism. I have it too, but have hardly any
symptoms anymore (and I used to feel very bad).
I have told people on this group before that the
Peruvian root Maca helped everybody I told about it,
after I had such great success with it.
I also watch what I eat, for there is a list of foods
that inhibit thyroid function...
Maca is sold in health food stores and on the web:
American Botanicals sells it
and there is Maca by Now and other brands.
It really helped us...

for another doc if you have to. good luck

[hypothyroidism]What??...completely normal?!?

2008-10-09 18:08:52

So I got my blood tested 2 days ago for TSH and T4 and I got the results
yesterday and they came back normal!!!! But I've only been on 75 mcg of Levoxyl
for 1 1/2 months and I don't even feel better, so how can this all be normal but
still feel out of balance. What should I say to my doctor, I am seeing him next
week but don't know what I should say. What do you guys think??Thanks have a
good day.

Re: [hypothyroidism] cracks in skin--vinegar

I have had the same problem and my feet are pretty
well healed now, but it took a long, long time to get
there. I bathe my feet in vinegar every day. You
probably use a pumice stone... that helps too, but
only in addition.
My daughter uses a spray bottle and sprays her feet
with vinegar, but her feet have never been as bad as
mine...
maybe that will help you too... but be prepared, it
takes a lot of patience
I am sure that you still have to take the fish oil
(and maybe colloidal silver?)

Re: Unithroid?--Updated (Natural vs synthetic meds)

2008-10-08 05:38:01

Thanks for the feedback. So far your description has been pretty
accurate. My dosage has been increased twice and is currently
at .15mg.
I was feeling better when I was taking something over-the-counter,
but the doctor took me off of it. I feel I'm going backwards.
Muscle and joints are hurting, headaches, itchy hives, decreasing
libido, and fatigue. All of these symptoms were being relieved with
the non-prescription med.
I was wondering should I ask for Cytomel, or if I should just go to
Armour? The over-the-counter stuff was natural thryroid, and maybe I
should just ask her to switch to Armour.
Have seen some comments that say there've been problems with dosage
consistenacy.
Any thoughts on natural vs synthetic? I'm going to try to call the
doc tomorrow.

cloudy urine

2008-10-07 22:08:57

For at least probably the last month and a half I've been experience
some cloudy urine. It doesn't smell any different and I don't have to
go any more often than I have before (although for the last few years
I haven't been able to go more than a couple nites a month without
getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night). I
searched around on the internet some to see if there was some kind of
link between synthroid/hypothyroidism and cloudy urine but found
nothing so I don't know if they have anything to do with eachother.
Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening and how to make it
stop?
Eden

Re: cloudy urine

2008-10-07 21:13:02

Eden,
When you mentioned cloudy urine, the first thing that came to mind
was urinary tract infection. I think you'd know if you'd had that. I
have cloudy urine now BUT I'm pregnant, and I think you'd know if you
were pregnant! LOL! I don't KNOW what it is but I would check with
your personal physician and tell him of this problem. It could be
just as simple as a UTI. Be aware that an unchecked UTI COULD turn
into a kidney infection and BELIEVE me you don't want that( VERy
painful). When you mention the peeing at night, the first thing that
came to mind for me is diabetes. You might want to get your glucose
checked also.
On a personal note, I take Levoxyl. I'm not sure when you take it,
but I know 20 minutes after I take mine in the morning, I'm running
to the bathroom. It's like clockwork. It would be interesting if you
find some correlation between the two.
Well, there's my stab in the dark!!! LOL! Unless someone else comes
up with another possibility, I would check with your physician.

Re: [hypothyroidism] Question about other meds.

Question about other meds.

2008-10-06 20:27:19

Hello, I feel like this is a silly question.....but I'm sure it's not.
Is it Ok to take Motrin while on Synthroid? I only ask, because of
an experience I had a month ago. I had a really bad sinus head
cold. While looking at the different over the counter meds., I
realized ALL of them said not to take their med. if you had a thyroid
condition!! I talked to the Pharmacist there in the store, and he
said I needed to get a script. from my family Doctor. The Pharmacist
also pointed out to me, that I can't take any over the counter
antacids.....like Tums. So, now I'm wondering if Motrin's Ok for my
aches and pains?????

In a message dated 1/8/2003 3:00:55 AM Pacific Standard Time,
john.codling@... writes:
Dear John,
No, you're not imagining that you can feel the T3 wearing off! When I was on
the instant release T3, I too, could feel when its effect wore off! I know
its actual half-life is something like 2.5 days, but I suppose that your body
can tell when there really isn't enough T3 in your system to keep your body
revved up anymore, so it just sags back to its hypo state.
Dr. Wilson, too, in developing the compounded, time-release T3 used his
patients' reports of when they felt the T3 effect wearing off as a guideline
for how much of the time-release agent to add to make his T3 last smoothly
over 12 hours. So, you're definitely not alone!
When I first went on the T3, the medicine I'm currently on, I felt nervous
about going hyper, since my former doctor kept insisting I was hyper based on
my TSH numbers. Now, I've been on the timed-release T3 only for 15 months
and I've never gone hyper. After I'd been on the medicine about three
months, I went to Weight Watchers for the first time in my life and slowly
over this past year, I lost 30 pounds. So, you'll probably have to work at
losing weight if you're like me; it won't just fall off! And I can pretty
much guarantee you, you won't become hyper overnight, and especially on 20
mcg per day.
One thing you might be experiencing (heart racing, sweating, etc.) is T3
unsteadiness. Dr. Wilson talks a lot about that in his Doctor's Manual and
his timed-release formula and his strict dosing schedule is geared to keep T3
unsteadiness at a minimum because it's very uncomfortable. Usually, though,
you only have tendency to unsteadiness when you're at higher doses such as
52.5, 60, 67.5 mcg and up. You can also experience unsteadiness if you only
get one dose per day, or if the T3 effect wears off and you don't get a
smooth, steady supply throughout day and night.
You might try splitting your tablet and taking half at a set time in the
morning and half exactly 12 hours later. I know your tablet is ridiculously
small, but that's what I did when I was on instant release T3. It helped.
Not a lot, but at least I felt like I could function better throughout the
day. The timed-release T3 is like riding in a smooth, automatic Cadillac,
though compared to the cheap, Ford Escort with a stick shift ride of the
instant release T3. Some people do well on instant release, don't get me
wrong! But, I SO much more prefer the timed-release! Maybe it would help
you if your doctor knows about it!
I hope this helps,
Linda in LA

Re: [hypothyroidism] help to understand the readings

2008-10-06 06:07:48

Dear Osvaldo,
Here is a link to a page on Mary Shomon's website on how to interpret your
blood test readings. Remember it is only a guideline but it is a start. <A
HREF="http://thyroid.about.com/library/howto/htthyroid-test.htm"
http://thyroid.about.com/library/howto/htthyroid-test.htm</A
But beyond that, I think the question you need to answer is, "Do I feel my
doctor is treating me or is he just treating my blood test numbers?" It
sounds to me as if he is treating to the numbers, not to your symptoms. If
your numbers are "normal" but you don't feel well, then you need to find
another doctor who will treat you according to your symptoms and how you
FEEL, not based on the blood tests.
Sorry I'm not good at telling you if the Free T4 or whatever is too high or
low. My doctor doesn't do blood tests on me because he knows that was I
extremely, extremely sick with hypothyroidism yet all my blood tests came
back with "normal" readings. IMO, blood tests are not as important as your
daily, average, daytime body temperature reading!
Good luck,
Linda in LA

goitrogenic foods (Plus comment)

2008-10-06 01:23:41

thanks lil2du and Ingrid for the info! much appreciation.

is it safe

2008-10-05 09:53:50

Guys,
I was on t4 @100mcr and 125mcr alternative days. I was told that my blood was
fine and go away and you will get better.
I didnt not and found another Dr recommended by the Thyroid support group in the
UK.
I have seen this guy and he treats on how you feel. He said I looked Hypo(Bags
under eyes) I was distant and blank and I felt cold and of course all the other
symptoms of HYPO cramps feeling tired ETC etc.
He kept me on the T4 regime but added T3 @20mcr per day. .Starting with 10mcr
and working up after two weeks//
I had some problems in the first two weeks taking this dose, Sweating , heart
pounding but this has subsided..
I still get periods of my heart going fast but this could be excitement on my
part. Also I can tell the T3 wearing off about 7pm around 11 hours after taking
it, Is this correct or I am imagining it?
My question to the group I have not had a blood test as yet would I be a little
bit hyper now according to the blood tests and is it dangerous to be a little
bit hyper?
I sort of feel ok but still have not lost any weight as yet and the cramps
return about 8pm not bad but they are there.
I have to bear in mind I have been like this for 2 years and perhaps I am not on
the right dose yet and also my body has to repair.. Would this be a good
assumption.
Best regards
John C Uk
