Dear Charmaine,
Sorry to delay my reply; I've been looking for an article I read early last
year about thyroid and bipolar that I thought would be insightful for you. I
think it is a tricky thing after years of medication for bipolar to enlist
the help of doctors who know you and have preconceptions about your condition
to shift to a new paradigm about what may be be driving your mood disorder.
I know as a parent of two bipolar children, I myself, would feel very wary if
they decided they wanted to come off their medication to prove to me they
weren't really bipolar! I feel this way, even though I firmly believe many
cases of BP are really untreated HypoT just because I never want to go
through another manic episode with either of them!
That said though, I think it is entirely possible for you to improve your
situation by making careful, considered, gradual changes and enlist a team of
supportive professionals along the way. You have to be very measured and
patient coming off SSRIs because of the high probabiltity of panic attacks
and other weird side effects that can last months after their discontinuance.
I was once on Neurontin for pain for about six months then suffered with
terrible panic attacks for about six weeks following its discontinuance.
This article I'm sending you is a reference I picked up from the
Bipolar.About.com website. If you haven't visited there, it's a great place!
I used this info with my middle daugther when she had a breakdown and it
helped but she really wanted to just be on mind meds so she released the
support for thyroid function, sadly. Here's the link:

I also recently read another fascinating story about how a schizophrenic
woman in Brazil came off her meds over the period of four years with daily
counseling, EFT, nutritional support. I'll try to find that link for you,
too.
Best of luck!
Linda
